God's Thumbprint

March 07, 2024

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

Psalm 19:1

The Creator calls to us through his creation. When we gaze up at the wide and blue sky; when we feel the warmth of the morning sun; when we see the crescent moon on a clear night; when ominous thunderclouds roll in; when streaks of lightning flash across the night; when we are out in the wild and endless stars crowd the night sky, at all of these times, we see the thumbprint of God. We hear the voice of God. We sense the glory of God. We feel the power of God.

What do the heavens tell us about God? They tell us that God exists, that there is a Creator behind the creation. Down deep we know that there is an unseen Creator behind creation.

Moreover, the heavens tell us that God is big. He is so big! As we learn more and more about the size of the universe, our appreciation of God’s power and greatness grows more and more. This God, this Creator, is immense beyond words.

The heavens also tell us that God is good. He is the God who “makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45). He is good and gracious to all that he has made.

The heavens tell us much more: that God is faithful, that God is wise, that God is unpredictable, that God is consistent, that God is majestic, that God is kind. He is the sovereign and infinite God. He is the God of overwhelming beauty and majesty. “The beauty of the world is Christ’s tender smile for us coming through matter” (Simone Weil).

How great is our God!

When we see the glory of God in the heavens, we are humbled, undone and thunderstruck. This is God and he must be worshiped. This is God and he must be obeyed. This is God and he must be loved.
