The Woodlands Prayer Walk is a movement in our community to pray for our schools and future generations the Sunday before school starts. This is an opportunity for us to gather as one Church, one Body of Believers without distinction, to lift the name of Jesus Christ over our schools. We can pray for those in our own area, and ask God to use these prayers to impact the future for His glory.

PRAYER

At WoodsEdge we long to be a great house of prayer.  We believe prayer is a heartfelt  conversation between God and his people. In our pursuit of God, we desire to maintain a balance of honoring the word of God and an openness to the Holy Spirit.

God’s Word and experience of the Holy Spirit

We believe everything must be tested by the totality of scripture.
Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.  Acts 17:10-12

We believe the Holy Spirit will not act in contradiction to scripture.
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 John 4:1

We believe all believers receive the Holy Spirit.
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is for the common good.  1 Cor 12:7

The Holy Spirit was sent to glorify Christ alone.
He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.  John 16:14

We believe in the sovereignty of God.
You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord,“and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior. I declared and saved and proclaimed, when there was no strange god among you; and you are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and I am God. Also dhenceforth I am he there is none who can deliver from my hand; I work, and who can turn it back?”  Isaiah 43:10–13

Why do we pray?

Jesus modeled it
But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.  Luke 5:16

Out of obedience
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Rom 12:12
Devote yourselves to prayer be watchful and thankful.  Col 4:2

To behold the beauty of the Lord
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquirein his temple. Ps 27:4

To be filled with the Holy Spirit
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Rom 15:15

To allow God’s peace to guard our heart and mind
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Phil 4:6-7

To receive the Spirit of wisdom and revelation
I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him.  Eph 1:16-17

To guard against temptation
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”  Matt. 26:41

To know the thoughts of God
But, as it is written,“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him” these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.  1 Corin 2:9-12

When do we pray?

Continually
Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  1 Theo 5;16-18

Constantly
They all joined together constantly in prayer.  Acts 1:14
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.  Rom 12:12

Always
Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.
Eph 6:18

In the day of trouble
In the day of my trouble I will call to you for you will answer me.  Ps 86:7

In Suffering
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.  Is anyone cheerful?  Let him sing praise.  James 5:13

How do we pray?

We ask. We do not command.
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks find; and to him who knocks the door will be opened.  Matt. 7:7-8

We call
Call to me and I will tell you great and unsearchable things.  Jer 33:3

We listen
And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”
1 Samuel 3:
10

Lay our requests before the Lord
In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voices; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.  Ps 5:3

In solitude
And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. Mark 1:35

In community
And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2:42

In the Spirit
Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. Eph 6:18
The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.  Rom 8:26

In humility
Because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and its inhabitants, and you have humbled yourself before me and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the Lord. 2 Chron 34:27

We pray in faith
Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see" Heb11:1
Surely you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God.  You will pray to him, and he will hear you. Job 22:26-27

Laying on of hands and anointing with oil
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
James 5:14

Sickness, Healing and Suffering

We believe that as Christ followers we are not guaranteed a life without struggle. God uses suffering to deepen our faith, develop our character and strengthen our dependence on him. We live in a fallen world where our human bodies are subject to decay.  We believe that God is able and willing to heal.  We do not believe that he is obligated. We believe that God heals as an expression of his mercy. We believe that God is all powerful and all resources are under his authority. God heals physically, mentally, emotionally and relationally. We believe he heals in a variety of ways: supernaturally, through medicine, instantaneously, over time. In some cases, we receive our healing in heaven. God heals for his divine purposes.

Isaiah 53:5 “with his wounds we are healed” is often taken out of context.  The healing that is being addressed is not physical healing; rather it is the healing of our sin that separates us from God.  We see this through the relational language used in the writing of this passage.  As Christ followers the atonement does not guarantee good health or a lack of suffering this side of heaven, rather we trust in God’s sovereignty.

Suffering

We trust he is sovereign
See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me;I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand. Deut 32:39

We believe we will face trials on earth
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison 2 Cor 4:17
Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come? Lamentations 3:37-38
Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” Job 2:10

God uses suffering to strengthen our faith
Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. John15:2

We trust in his ways
He declares “the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.’” Isaiah 46:10
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21

We trust in God’s timing. His ways are higher then our ways.
Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia.
Daniel 10:12-13

We become more bold for the gospel
And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Phil 1:14

Why does God heal?

So that God would be glorified
But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
John 11:4

As a testimony of what Jesus has done
Go home to your family and tell them what the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you. Mark 5:6-20

To show his compassion
When Jesus landed and and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.  Matt 14:14

Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man, “I am willing” he said, “Be clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. Mark 1:41

Because he cares for you
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7

Because we ask
And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. Mark 10:48-52

In response to our trust
For they cried out to God in the battle, and he granted their urgent plea because they trusted in him. 1 Chron 5:20b

In response to our faith that he is able
Daughter, you faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free from your suffering.
Matt 5:34

When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” And their eyes were opened.
Matthew 9:28-30a

Why doesn’t God heal?

God will use suffering for his divine purposes
My grace is sufficient for you, my power is made perfect in weakness.  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.  That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.  For when I am weak then I am strong. 2 Cor 12:8-10

We lack faith that God is able
When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” And their eyes were opened.
Matthew 9:28-30a

We do not ask.
You do not have because you do not ask. James 4:2

We are seeking our own motives
You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
James 4:3

We have not turned from cherished sin
If I regard wickedness in my heart, the Lord will not hear. Ps 66:18
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.  1Peter 3:12

Our heart has wandered away from God
These people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me,and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men Is 29:13

Prophecy

We believe in all the gifts.  Gods word reveals the Lords heart for the body of Christ to practice the gifts with an upright heart to preserve and protect the body of Christ from those who would lead people astray.

Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord. I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’  How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal? Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord. Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who steal my words from one another. Behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who use their tongues and declare, ‘declares the Lord.’  Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, declares the Lord, and who tell them and lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or charge them. So they do not profit this people at all, declares the Lord. Jeremiah 23:24-32

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. James 3:13-18
